That said, a period-correct restoration often demands the real thing. A 1969 Camaro Super Stock tribute car looks and sounds wrong with a modern six-speed. The old-school gearbox keeps the experience authentic.
What Does It Cost to Build One?
A quality rebuilt lencodrive transmission runs between $3,500 and $8,000, depending on the number of gears and the core condition. Fresh units with billet parts and air-shift components can push past $10,000. Add a shifter, driveshaft yoke, and labor, and a complete swap often lands between $8,000 and $15,000.
Is that worth it? For a dedicated track car or a serious collector, yes. For a weekend cruiser, there are cheaper ways to have fun. The value lies in the story it tells and the way it turns a quarter-mile pass into something unforgettable.
