Toyota's rich off-road racing heritage has long fed into its TRD-branded trucks. Despite TRD Pro versions of the Tacoma and Tundra representing the brand's highest off-road ambitions, Toyota has never directly challenged the truck that defines the segment: the Ford F-150 Raptor. That may finally be changing. After Toyota recently filed a trademark for the name TRD Hammer, spy photos of a heavily modified Tundra prototype have emerged — and the hardware strapped to it looks very much like a Raptor rival in training.
The prototype is identifiably a Toyota Tundra Crew Max 4x4 with the high-output twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6, based on badging visible through the camouflage. Beyond the bodywork wrap, the most immediately obvious differences from a standard Tundra are dramatically widened front and rear fenders. Vents are visible in the front fenders that don't appear on any current production Tundra, and steel bumpers have been fitted front and rear. The front bumper photograph is blurry, but even that limited view reveals how much more approach clearance this truck has than the dealer-lot equivalent. The rear bumper tells a similar story.
The tires are the other dead giveaway. All four corners wear chunky BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3s that match the rubber found on the Ford F-150 Raptor — our spy photographer estimates they measure approximately 37 inches in diameter. The rear axle is solid and sports a panhard rod, and the front lower control arms appear beefier than standard Tundra units, again echoing the Raptor's setup. Long-travel suspension with increased wheel articulation for high-speed desert running also seems likely, though we can't confirm that from the images alone.
Toyota hasn't responded to questions about the trademark, but the company reportedly surveyed Tundra owners about potential names for a future performance truck — and TRD Hammer was one of the options floated. Taken with these spy images, the conclusion seems clear: Toyota is finally developing a serious answer to the F-150 Raptor. Whether it comes with a supercharged V-8 capable of matching the 720-hp Raptor R or 777-hp Ram SRT TRX is another question entirely — but the bones of something substantial are clearly taking shape.
