2027 Chevy Silverado Spy Photos Confirm the ZR2 Is Getting Bigger Tires at Last

2027 Chevy Silverado Spy Photos Confirm the ZR2 Is Getting Bigger Tires at Last

Half-ton trucks and off-road-optimized SUVs dominate today's automotive conversation. If an automaker doesn't have a strong contender in either segment, it's essentially sitting at the wrong table. And staying competitive isn't just about keeping existing vehicles around—stale lineups don't cut it anymore. Chevy clearly understands what's at stake, which is why the brand is bringing an entirely new generation of the Silverado 1500 for 2027. Fresh spy shots from our photographer reveal that both the ZR2 and Trail Boss nameplates are surviving into the new generation.

The headline upgrade on the next-generation ZR2 is the tire package. The current model tops out at 33-inch rubber measuring 275/65R-18; the prototype we photographed is wearing 35-inch Goodyear Territory MTs in a 285/75 R-18 size. Larger tires alone don't guarantee the same capability as the Ford F-150 Raptor or Ram 1500 SRT TRX—both of which use a wider track width than their standard siblings, something the new ZR2 does not appear to do—but it's a meaningful step in the right direction.

The new Silverado ZR2 also sports a revised front bumper flanked by generous cutouts to accommodate the front tires, a design cue that echoes the current generation. A new skid plate beneath the chin extends forward and downward below the restyled bumper, not unlike the shape of a football helmet's chinstrap.

Spy shots of the Trail Boss show a similar level of visual updating. The revised front end follows the direction of the broader new Silverado lineup rather than the ZR2's more aggressive look. Though the new bumper should improve the approach angle versus the outgoing model, the Trail Boss doesn't appear to gain the enlarged tire spec of its more capable stablemate—it's expected to roll on the same rubber as the current model.

These ZR2 and Trail Boss images join earlier spy shots of the next-generation Silverado in crew-cab and regular-cab form, all of which suggest the truck's official unveiling is drawing near. We'll be covering the full 2027 Chevy Silverado reveal when it happens.
